Big search engines work by cataloging every webpage on the internet they can find, which is why your searches return so many results
This worked great in 1999 when the web was much smaller. The problem is, the world wide web today is enormous and much of it is actually junk
We believe that searching through the entire world wide web (billions of pages) for a simple pizza dough recipe is rather inefficient. You wouldn't search an entire library for books on the American Civil War, you would simply look around the history section
IRI searches through a human curated index of only great websites that contain recipes, cocktails and cooking instructions. SEO garbage, AI slop or anything with pop-up ads, is left out. The index is relatively small because we sort it manually. But this makes ranking relevant results easier.
I'm Max, I like to cook and I've been fed up with the enshittification of everything for a long time now. Recipe websites are some of the worst examples of what is wrong with the modern world wide web. I'm sure you all know what I mean. Nothing slows a browser down like a pop up video advertisement for multivitamins. I created IRI.cooking because I think we can create better ways to organize information on the internet.
IRI is a hobby project created by myself. It aims to be both a useful resource and a proof of concept for alternative search engines. It is built on open source software, mainly Linux, PostgreSQL and PHP.
